The club that is in existence currently started originally around the time that the current members were born, in 1987. When the club started it was part of the Kevin Street college and was known as the Kevin Street Kayak Club. There had previously been a canoe club in existence in the college but it had fallen apart.
The club started from scratch that year, it was started by four members. That year the club invested in four Europas and four paddles, helmets and buoyancy aids. The clubs first trip was to Dun Laoighaire harbour in December of 1987. Other trips to follow were to Graignamaneuagh, Sligo, Wicklow and on the Liffey.
At the start, the club experienced problems with accessing the pool as they had no qualified lifeguard, at that stage, they recruited a lifeguard from Naas to run the swimming pool sessions. The pool sessions took place on Wednesday nights, followed by a visit to the local!
The boats were stored in the back garden of the then sports officer, Shay Byrne, in Monkstown. The gear was stored in a locker under the stairs near the pool. (This locker is still used by the club!)
The club were generally quite successful, fielding a team each year for the Dublin Canoe Polo League. The Polo team came about in 1992, and the same team members are still together and going strong. Over the years they have won the league at various different divisions.
Kevin Street club have won the Club Championships several times in Kilcock, and the teams participate in the National League each year they have also won many of the summer competitions, including the highly competitive Carrick-on-Shannon June competition.
